Scholars Celebration

The Scholars Celebration is a high-tea style luncheon to honor our AWIS SD Scholarship winners.

The AWIS San Diego Scholarship Program strives to encourage and reward women pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields where women are typically underrepresented. Awardees are selected from an outstanding applicant pool representing colleges and universities throughout San Diego County. The AWIS San Diego Scholarships, presented annually for the last 20 years, support the students’ educational and research expenses. Please join us to celebrate the endeavors of these outstanding women! Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you have any questions.

The AWIS San Diego Scholars Celebration

The AWIS San Diego Scholars Celebration (formerly known as "Scholarship Gala") is one of the two major events AWIS sponsors every year alternating with the Women in Science and Technology (WIST) conference. The Scholars Celebration is a wonderful occasion that honors the scholarship recipients for that year and celebrates AWIS and our mission.  This event enjoys the support of many of our longstanding members.  Each celebration has been unique in theme and venue since its inception in 1996.  The first gala took place at the Natural History Museum in Balboa park and celebrated the 25th anniversary of AWIS.
Since then, the venue has varied from the Birch Aquarium to The Prado Restaurant to Casino Night at The Scripps Research Institute Faculty Club, The Black and White Ball at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, lunch at the Orfila Winery in Escondido, La Jolla Woman's Club, and most recently at UCSD Faculty Club.
The purpose of the celebration/gala has also evolved over the years.  As an event originally meant to generate monies for the scholarship fund, the celebration is now also used as a public relations tool meant to establish contacts and name recognition within the San Diego scientific community.  In turn, the celebration is no longer simply an event for the most longstanding AWIS members but also for the movers and shakers in science and technology of San Diego.
