Panel Discussion on Scientific Writing

The AWIS-SD Academia 2 Industry (A2i) Coffee Club is an informal gathering for women in academia who are interested in transitioning to an industry career. Meetings will be held online using the Zoom platform ( Two days prior to the meeting and the day of the event, you will be given a Meeting ID and a Password for joining. Please check spam and quarantine folders if you do not receive info.
 For our December event, A2I is hosting a Scientific Writers Panel featuring
Jennifer Yang, Miriam Cohen, and Monica May.

Dr. Jennifer Yang is a Senior Medical Writer at Vaniam Group. As a medical writer, Jennifer works with biotech and pharmaceutical clients in scientific communications and medical affairs to publish manuscripts, abstracts, and posters. She completed her PhD in Endocrinology and Animal Biosciences and postdoc in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences prior to her transition to industry in 2019. 


 Dr. Miriam Cohen earned a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. She joined the Glycobiology Research andimage3.jpg Training Center at the University of California San Diego as a postdoctoral fellow and later Assistant Project Scientist where she studied glycobiology and infectious diseases. In 2016, Dr. Cohen transitioned from academia to the Medical Communication industry, working on promotional education and publications. Dr. Cohen is a creative medical writer and scientist with over 20 years of experience in creating training materials, analyzing complex scientific data, providing strategic insights, and writing, reviewing and editing publications. Dr. Cohen is passionate about promoting women and girls in science. She volunteered at the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) between 2015-2019, and leads a STEM-focused Girl Scout troop.

Monica May, MA (she/her/hers) is a communications officer for the Department of Neurological Surgery at UC San Diego Health, where she helps raise the profile of the Department’s groundbreaking research and education programs, and a board member for the San Diego Association of Science Writers (SANDSWA). Prior to this position she was a science writer for Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, where she wrote and produced an award-winning monthly e-newsletter; expanded the Institute’s presence on social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram); secured media coverage in national, trade and local outlets; produced videos and more. Previous to these positions she worked for two life science-focused public relations agencies, Canale Communications and Russo Partners, where she helped clients achieve strategic goals such as accelerating clinical trial enrollment, reaching potential partners or increasing sales leads. She also spent a few years working as a research technician in a lab at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology that studies dengue fever, where she contributed to a study published in the Journal of Immunology. Monica holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular, cellular and developmental biology and a master’s degree in education, both from UC Santa Cruz. In her free time, she can be found walking her beagle, exploring the mountains of San Diego or reading a great book.


Jennifer, Miriam, and May will speak about their experience as scientific writers and any challenges they may have encountered when transitioning from academia to industry. Join us December 2nd @ 5 pm and come with questions!
