The AWIS-SD Academia 2 Industry Coffee Club is an informal gathering for women in academia who are interested in transitioning to an industry career. The group meets the first or second Wednesday of the month at 5 pm at the Bella Vista Cafe (https://goo.gl/maps/o9o8RJTMH3x).
For our May meet-up, A2I has invited Dr. Kate Blease to speak with the group.
Dr. Kate Blease received her B.Sc. in Pharmacology at the University of Bath in 1995. During this time she was part of the industrial placement program where she had the opportunity to spend a year at Celtech in their Pharmacology group developing PDE4 inhibitors for the treatment of respiratory disease. Dr. Blease obtained her Ph.D. in Pharmacology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London studying the role of adhesion molecules in lung disease. Her postdoctoral studies took her to University of Michigan, Department of Pathology in 1999 under the guidance of Dr. Steve Kunkel and Dr. Cory Hogaboam. Her research focus was around mechanisms of lung fibrosis. Following her Postdoctoral appointment she spent 1 year in a small start-up company, Selective Genetics in San Diego and then joined Celgene in 2002 where she was responsible for establishing the Inflammation, Immunology and Fibrosis Pharmacology Group. Her current role at Celgene is as Sr. Director leading the Pharmacology Group. This group is responsible for providing pharmacology support for all the Oncology and Immuno-oncology drug discovery efforts, from early target identification and validation through to drug candidate nomination and IND submission.
Dr. Blease will speak about her role as a Sr. Director leading the Pharmacology Group at Celgene, her experience as a woman in Biotech and the challenges she encountered when transitioning from academia to industry.
Please join us Wednesday May 1st, 2019 @5 pm and come with questions for Dr. Blease!
